Monument to the Three Charters for National Reunification

The Monument to the Three Charters for National Reunification stands at the southern entrance to Thongil Street in Pyongyang.
Leader Kim Jong Il works hard to implement President Kim Il Sung's instructions on national reunification. The leader established the three principles of national reunification, the proposal for founding a Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo and the ten-point programme of the great unity of the whole nation for the reunification of the country, proposed by the President, as the three charters for national reunification, and ensured that the monument was erected to encourage all Koreans to implement them.

The three principles of independence, peaceful reunification and great national unity form a joint reunification programme of the nation, which was confirmed by the north and south through the July 4 Joint Statement and solemnly proclaimed at home and abroad.

The proposal for founding a Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo provides practical details of the nature of a future reunified state and explains how it can be realized. It puts forward the fundamental ways of reunifying the country fairly and smoothly on the basis of each side accepting the ideas and systems of the other.

The ten-point programme of the great unity of the whole nation for the reunification of the country fully elucidates the target of great national unity and the foundation of its idea and the principles and ways of achieving it. It is a political programme to unite the whole nation and strengthen the internal forces for reunification.

The monument stands on an area of more than 100,000 square metres.

The vaulted white granite monument depicts two women in the north and south, in Korean dresses, upholding the emblem of the three charters for national reunification showing the Korean map.

It is 30 metres high, symbolic of the three charters, and 61.5 metres wide, symbolic of the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration.

The pedestals of the monument feature four sub-thematic group sculptures, representing the three principles of national reunification, the proposal for founding a Democratic Federal Republic of Koryo, the ten-point programme of the great unity of the whole nation and the cheers of the people for a reunified Korea.

Inside the monument are display halls for more than 740 stones donated by Koreans in the north, south and abroad, as well as the world's revolutionary people.

Standing on the front plaza is a monolith inscribed with the President's instructions on achieving national reunification on the principle of great national unity.

A tree-planting district around the monument covers an area of 8 hectares.

The monument was unveiled on the occasion of the 56th anniversary of Korea's liberation in August Juche 90 (2001).

Delegates from a variety of different parties and all strata of society in the north, south and abroad held the opening and closing ceremonies of the Grand National Reunification Festival 2001 in front of the monument on the occasion of the anniversary of Korea's liberation, the first in the new century.
