Hangawi, Folk Holiday of Korea
Pyongyang, October 5 (KCNA) -- Hangawi (the lunar August 15th) this year falls on October 6. The Korean nation has celebrated it as an auspicious folk holiday since ancient times.
On the day the Korean people visit their ancestral graves with folk dishes they have prepared with sincerity and enjoy the holiday, sharing the dishes with their neighbors.
Among the national food are half-moon-shaped rice cakes (stuffed with beans and flavored with pine needles), steamed rice cakes in layers and glutinous rice-cakes. They are all made with new crops for the year.
Apple, pear, grapes and jujube are the typical fruits on the day.
During the daytime, people have their strength and wisdom contest through swinging, Korean wrestling and other folk games. In the evening, they gather together to view the full moon, while dancing and singing.
The Hangawi customs show the beautiful moral traits of the Korean people who are courteous and faithful to their duty.
The Hangawi customs of Korea with a time-honored history and brilliant culture is being further encouraged under the wise leadership of the Workers' Party of Korea which values the good manners and customs peculiar to the Korean nation.
